My civic/charitable work came after a lifelong struggle with a stammer, when in June 2000 I became involved with The McGuire Programme and learned both physical and psychological techniques which enabled me to have control over my stammer and ultimately overcome my fear of speaking. I now coach other members of the programme and support and encourage them in their journey to overcome their disability. I am also the Director of Child Protection for the programme, which has an ever increasing under 18 membership.
Since 2007 until this summer, when I resigned, I was an adviser with the Citizens’ Advice Bureau, first in London where we then lived, and subsequently in Bordon, when we moved here in 2014. I have also been a volunteer with both Home-Start, one of the leading family support charities in the UK and the Youth Offending Team, a multi-agency team that is coordinated by individual local authorities and which is overseen by the Youth Justice Board.
We love the village atmosphere and the sense of community that defines Grayshott and which was so lacking in London, and I feel very privileged to be able to serve the community as a parish councillor.
