In 2017 following an inspection of the war memorial the original cross was found to have a split. The cross was removed and a new replica cross was carved and installed. On Sunday 29th October 2017 a ceremony was held to rededicate Grayshott’s war memorial.
But what happened to the original cross……
This has been repaired, cleaned and attached to a metal support bracket and is now displayed on a bespoke plinth in the Parish Council Office at the sports pavilion. The Parish Council would like to thank Phil Bates and Richard Peskett for the repair and restoration work and an anonymous local donor.
The cross takes center stage in the latest display from Grayshott Heritage, “Grayshott during the First and Second World Wars”. Information includes the Grayshott War Hospital, Superior Camp, the fate of the Belgian refugees and the Battle of Ludshott Common.
The information display and the War Memorial Cross are available for anyone to view whilst the office is open, we are here most mornings so just pop in, or please ring the office to arrange a time to visit – 01428 606510.
